It is native to parts of the Caribbean and northern South America, but it has been widely introduced throughout temperate and tropical regions originally for mosquito control, later as a popular species in the commercial aquarium trade. Further accidental introductions via release of unwanted pets and escape from aquaculture facilities are likely, and eradication of established populations is extremely difficult without broad scale damage to the aquatic environment and biota. Depending on the species, determining the sex of a fish ranges from easy to nearly impossible. Knowing the sexual differences in aquarium fish is important when trying to breed fish and also for choosing the proper balance of fish for a community aquarium. Although not all fish can be easily identified by sex, these tips will help you recognize the sex of many of the common species of aquarium fish.
Atheriniformany member of the order Atheriniformes, containing 15 families of marine and freshwater spiny-finned fishesincluding the flying fishes see photographneedlefishessilversidesand cyprinodonts. The last group, the Cyprinodontidaeis an abundant tropical and subtropical family that includes the guppiesmolliesswordtailsand many other aquarium fishes. In addition to the Atheriniformes, this article treats the three smaller related orders BeryciformesZeiformesand Lampridiformesthe most primitive groups of the superorder Acanthopterygiior spiny-finned fishes.

Ichthyological Research. The population structure of the Japanese fluvial sculpin, Cottus pollux large egg typein the upper reaches of the Inabe River, Mie Prefecture, central Japan, was investigated by a mark-and-recapture method from July to January Breeding of the species occurred from mid February to early May, peaking from mid February to late March.
Fish samples were collected between July and December Fourteen morphometric variables, including body weight, total length, standard length, body depth, cheek depth, pre-orbital length, postorbital length, pectoral fin length right and leftpelvic fin length right and lefthead length, gonad weight, eye diameter and four meristic variables, including number of pectoral fins right and left and number of pelvic fins right and leftwere taken using standard methods. Size-adjusted morphometric measurements subjected to step-wise discriminant function analysis were used to determine predictor variables to morphologically differentiate sexes for both species; magnitude of dimorphism between sexes was estimated using percentage classification accuracy of the discriminant function analysis.
Platy is a common name of freshwater fish in the genus Xiphophorus that lacks a "sword" at the bottom of their tails. Both species are livebearerssimilar to other fish of the family Poeciliidaesuch as the guppy and molly. Platies are native to the east coast of Central America and southern Mexico.
Sexual size dimorphism is an interesting phenomenon occurred in many fish species. Wildtype zebrafish exhibits a significant sexual dimorphism in body size at the adult stage. Previous studies indicated that sexual size dimorphism was eliminated in stat5b -mutated zebrafish. Herein, the comparative transcriptome analysis was conducted to observe the genes and pathways involved in sexual size dimorphism.
Certification: ijb [ Generate Certificate ]. This study was done for public health and environmental concerns and aimed to determine the presence of cyanide in three fishes such as Channa striataOreochromis niloticus and Clarias batrachusand described the allometry and sex dimorphism of Chevron Snakehead. The research employed Cyanide Detection Tests, length-weight relationship, land-marking and relative warp analysis using tps software and PAST-Hotellings test.
The guppy Poecilia reticulataalso known as millionfish and rainbow fish is one of the world's most widely distributed tropical fishand one of the most popular freshwater aquarium fish species. It is a member of the family Poeciliidae and, like almost all American members of the family, is live-bearing. They are highly adaptable and thrive in many different environmental and ecological conditions.
